ALEXA MESSINA -interview

I interviewed Alex Messina. She is an interesting person when it comes to language background within her family. Both of her parents are Italian and speak the language fluently. Alexa does not speak Italian because she was never around it being spoken. Her parents and grandparents used to speak it when she was very young, but never as she grew up. Alexa speaks a bit of Spanish because she took 4 years of it in high school. Alexa's father was born in Italy and Alexa was born here in America. Good job.

Getting Personal / Critiquing & Changing Genres

When writing a personal essay, you are the only person who knows the point that is trying to be made. In order to make the information clearly understandable, you need to provide enough detail and support. You want to make your writing interesting and helpful enough to make the reader feel like reading your text is worth their time and effort. With critiquing and changing genres, you should be willing to accept flaws in your writing and adjust your techniques to make yourself a better writer. These topics are encouraged to help you out with your writing abilities in any given situation. =)

blogging about your languages

the only language spoke in my immediate family is english. my mother's side speaks lithuanian while my fathers side speaks italian. my immediate family only speaks english and we do not communicate in any other languages. my brother and i sometimes communicate in spanish, but it is only me and him because no one else in my family speaks spanish. i usually speak the same way at home as i do in school and in public. I use more spanish during  spanish class and when i talk to my brother than i do english. i also usually dont speak spanish with my brother in public, unless we are saying something that we dont want other people to hear. my mom gets mad sometimes because we do this around her when we dont want her to know what we're saying.

From Outside In

1) The features that make this piece of writing powerful are how the article is presented and the descriptive vocabulary the writer uses. The article is presented as if Barbara is talking comfortably to the reader. It is a very easy article to read. The article is descriptive and easy to picture what is going on. When she describes in which type of english she is speaking, I always knew exactly what she meant.
2) Some things especially valuable about this genre is that it reflects on real life and it is a true story. It makes people aware of how her life was as a child and how she grew up learning English from the outside in. She started out speaking black english and as she aged, she learned the importance and significant difference in when to speak improper english vs. standard english.

biographical narrative

Everyone has someone they can look up to; a role model. This person can be a family member, a friend, a fictional character, or a famous person. One person I really look up to is my gymnastics coach Sam Zeman.
I have had many great experiences with this guy, and never a bad one. Sam is 49 years old and is a short white bald guy. He is hardworking and always willing to lend a helping hand. Sam is dedicated to his coaching and passionate about the sport and his gymnasts. His primary goal is to watch his gymnasts become successful. He wants to see his kids do the best they can while having fun in the process. Sam is very good at making sure people understand what he is saying. Especially in gymnastics, some things can be confusing, and Sam is excellent at rewording phrases so that you have a clear understanding of the topic.
I have many good experiences with this man, but nothing compares to the time we have spent training in the gym. When we are in the gymnastics room, I see Sam as a coach and a friend leading me and my teammates toward our goals. All practice, I hear music blasting in the background to help motivate me and my teammates. The music also makes practice more fun. I smell the pool water and chlorine in the gym because the school's pool is in the room right beneath us. I taste chalk in the air as well as the chlorine from the swimming pool. I feel great during and after my workout; and am glad to have such a great coach train me in my sport. I feel hardworking and physically well, while feeling cared for and appreciated. Sam is a great coach and an awesome friend.

- ficitional; you create the character and the experience
-Choose language and vocab carefully (be specific)

Why and When we speak spanish in public 1-4

1. Marquez and her family "haven't adopted English as an official language" because they want to keep their cultural roots and have respect and comfort for their culture and family. I dont think it is rude or arrogant at all if a person chooses to speak Spanish rather than English in public.
2. The government doesn't make an official language for the US because the whole point in being an American is to be allowed to practice your own culture comfortably in your own home and in public.
3. This is a nicely written article. It flows very well and seems as though she is talking directly to you in a normal conversation. The article is straight forward and to-the-point. Also, she has a lot of good support that support her main points.
4. I think this genre is especially valuable because it is very easy to read and seems as if she is comfortably talking to you. The article is written well and is full of detail and support.
