There are some important things to know about interviewing people and conducting surveys for information. Good sources can be search engines and specialized search engines. The article discusses arranging interviews with both educated people and not as educated people. Make sure that everyone you interview is effected by your topic and/or has a strong opinion about your topic. The article explains how you need to ask quality questions and avoid "loaded" questions. Finally, make sure you take good notes during the interview and get full explanations of any topics discussed.
I am planning on using these tips to conduct interviews and surveys to collect data for my research paper.

Blog Reflection (In Class)
1) With my 1st draft lit. review, I learned about many interesting statistics and research discussions involving my topic of "how technology has impacted parenting".
2) Research papers need lit. review sections because it elaborates the research found in your sources and allows you to cite numerous legit sources. In a lit. review, the more information contained and wrote about, the better the review. You need to discuss the main topics and ideas of each article or source.
3)My research adds to my current knowledge. For example, I knew that teens are more likely to own small gadgets nowadays than their parents; but now I know clear numbers and statistics that show this is true.
4) With this topic, I expect to contribute information with data about my topic to anyone who feels they should read about it. I expect to make Americans aware of how technology has impacted parenting, the positive and negative effects, and how to approach and embrace or avoid the effects.

Ch. 3 Art of Quoting (In Class)
"The point we want to emphasize is that quoting what "they say" must always be connected with what "you" say." (pg.43) I feel this is a great quote because it expresses an important view on citing quotations and is a main point of the article. This quote is very powerful because it explains an essential tool for quoting authors in good writing. It shows you must paraphrase sentences and paragraphs while staying within the designated topic. In a nut shell, your words must be different in context, but contain the same meaning as the author you are quoting.

They Say I Say
The main points of "They Say I Say" include the following:
-Quoting too little throughout a paper
-"What 'they' say must always be connected with what 'you' say."
-Make sure the quotes support your topic/ main points
-Use different templates for quotations
-Mix your own words well with the writer's words
-Dont over analyze quotations
These skills and ideas will be useful in my future research paper writing because they lead to well organized and well written research papers. All of these main points brought up in the reading are what makes a research paper good enough to get an A. Out of these skills, the most important, in my opinion, are quoting too little throughout a paper, mixing your own words with the writer's words, and making sure the quotations directly support your topic/main points. These pieces of advise are essential to writing a great research paper.

Questions to ask about my research topic
1. I am writing about How technology has impacted parenting since the year 2000. I am also narrowing this topic to compare high-class vs. middle/lower-class population in America relative to the question. I am going to focus my topic on the Internet, media devices, and other gadgets.
2. I am writing for the American population in general; to make American citizens aware of how recent technology has impacted children and parenting, as well as how to avoid negative effects.
3. I have expectations of collecting about of research and having a fair number of statistics and facts about my topic's generality and specifics.
4. I plan to collect information by researching facts and statistics through the Internet and through books. I can also interview someone who relates well to my topic and has potential to be a significant part of my research paper.

My Topic - "How has technology impacted parenting?"
My topic is, "How has technology impacted parenting?".
This topic has potential to raise further questions. I do feel strongly about this question because I've seen a lot of good/bad parenting in my lifetime and I'm only 19 years old. This question is directly relevant to my discipline. I can find authoritative information about my topic by researching credible sources. This topic will force me to learn more about how technology has impacted parenting. With this topic, I can interview people and take photographs. I don't think many people are researching this topic.
To narrow my topic, I added the questions:
-Since the year 2000? (time)
-In America? (place)
-High-class vs. middle/lower class? (person)

Researching One in Six Million & Researching, or How I Feel in Love With Post-It Notes
In "Researching One in Six Million", the author explains how researching information about her grandmother is much different and more difficult than research papers in school. The information on her grandmother was limited and hard to find. Throughout Selznick's research, she gained interest in the topic she was learning about. The author explains all the things she did to obtain information on her grandmother.
In "Researching, or How I Fell in Love With Post-It Notes", the author talks about her thoughts of researching before college. She explains how she always had to do research, but never really knew how to do it or where to start. Throughout her article, she gives 3 steps of researching. The steps are mainly for setting yourself up to begin the research. I agree with Rodriguez's thoughts in her article because I don't think researching is as hard as preparing for it is. Her 3 steps are insightful and provide a lot of help. I also like how she uses some good analogies and attention keepers throughout her explanation of her steps.

Linguistic Landscape Brainstorming (LGBT)
My linguistic landscape project is based on LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people). My genre promotes equal rights and support for the LGBT community. This genre is not only intended to catch the attention on LGBT people, but also people who are not part of the community, to make them aware of what is out there and to try to collect supporters. LGBT community is should be a concern to our community because it effects the life of college students. Kids who are included in the LGBT community fight against hate crimes and discrimination. Every year, a number of students commit suicide and/or have problems regarding people who hate on members of the LGBT community. LGBT people should feel free to express themselves and not have to worry about being made fun of about their sexual orientation.

ALEXA MESSINA -interview
I interviewed Alex Messina. She is an interesting person when it comes to language background within her family. Both of her parents are Italian and speak the language fluently. Alexa does not speak Italian because she was never around it being spoken. Her parents and grandparents used to speak it when she was very young, but never as she grew up. Alexa speaks a bit of Spanish because she took 4 years of it in high school. Alexa's father was born in Italy and Alexa was born here in America. Good job.

Getting Personal / Critiquing & Changing Genres
When writing a personal essay, you are the only person who knows the point that is trying to be made. In order to make the information clearly understandable, you need to provide enough detail and support. You want to make your writing interesting and helpful enough to make the reader feel like reading your text is worth their time and effort. With critiquing and changing genres, you should be willing to accept flaws in your writing and adjust your techniques to make yourself a better writer. These topics are encouraged to help you out with your writing abilities in any given situation. =)

blogging about your languages
the only language spoke in my immediate family is english. my mother's side speaks lithuanian while my fathers side speaks italian. my immediate family only speaks english and we do not communicate in any other languages. my brother and i sometimes communicate in spanish, but it is only me and him because no one else in my family speaks spanish. i usually speak the same way at home as i do in school and in public. I use more spanish during spanish class and when i talk to my brother than i do english. i also usually dont speak spanish with my brother in public, unless we are saying something that we dont want other people to hear. my mom gets mad sometimes because we do this around her when we dont want her to know what we're saying.

From Outside In
1) The features that make this piece of writing powerful are how the article is presented and the descriptive vocabulary the writer uses. The article is presented as if Barbara is talking comfortably to the reader. It is a very easy article to read. The article is descriptive and easy to picture what is going on. When she describes in which type of english she is speaking, I always knew exactly what she meant.
2) Some things especially valuable about this genre is that it reflects on real life and it is a true story. It makes people aware of how her life was as a child and how she grew up learning English from the outside in. She started out speaking black english and as she aged, she learned the importance and significant difference in when to speak improper english vs. standard english.

biographical narrative
Everyone has someone they can look up to; a role model. This person can be a family member, a friend, a fictional character, or a famous person. One person I really look up to is my gymnastics coach Sam Zeman.
I have had many great experiences with this guy, and never a bad one. Sam is 49 years old and is a short white bald guy. He is hardworking and always willing to lend a helping hand. Sam is dedicated to his coaching and passionate about the sport and his gymnasts. His primary goal is to watch his gymnasts become successful. He wants to see his kids do the best they can while having fun in the process. Sam is very good at making sure people understand what he is saying. Especially in gymnastics, some things can be confusing, and Sam is excellent at rewording phrases so that you have a clear understanding of the topic.
I have many good experiences with this man, but nothing compares to the time we have spent training in the gym. When we are in the gymnastics room, I see Sam as a coach and a friend leading me and my teammates toward our goals. All practice, I hear music blasting in the background to help motivate me and my teammates. The music also makes practice more fun. I smell the pool water and chlorine in the gym because the school's pool is in the room right beneath us. I taste chalk in the air as well as the chlorine from the swimming pool. I feel great during and after my workout; and am glad to have such a great coach train me in my sport. I feel hardworking and physically well, while feeling cared for and appreciated. Sam is a great coach and an awesome friend.

Why and When we speak spanish in public 1-4
1. Marquez and her family "haven't adopted English as an official language" because they want to keep their cultural roots and have respect and comfort for their culture and family. I dont think it is rude or arrogant at all if a person chooses to speak Spanish rather than English in public.
2. The government doesn't make an official language for the US because the whole point in being an American is to be allowed to practice your own culture comfortably in your own home and in public.
3. This is a nicely written article. It flows very well and seems as though she is talking directly to you in a normal conversation. The article is straight forward and to-the-point. Also, she has a lot of good support that support her main points.
4. I think this genre is especially valuable because it is very easy to read and seems as if she is comfortably talking to you. The article is written well and is full of detail and support.

Reading as a writer of genres & Exercises in genre
I learned what a quad chat is and how it works. I also learned that it is a type of genre. A quad chat has 4 sections. In a nutshell, they are: Do, Plan, Check, Act. Even though a quad chat can be used in many different ways, it is helpful to the writer as a genre itself.
According to Jordana Hall, reading is a two-part structure: seeing and understanding. Part of this structure can be defined as a visual format or layout of a genre. Anything that composes an article is part of its structure, which includes front and text sizes as well as pictures and how it is set up.
These topics are useful in wrtiing because it gives a better understanding of how to make an article more appealing and interesting for the reader.

Genres: Textbooks vs. Text Messages vs. Advertisements
When I read a textbook, I use different strategies than reading a text message from my friend. This is because the textbook uses formal writing while the text message is informal. Reading a textbook is difficult and takes more concentration. A text message is usually brief while a textbook is longer with much more information. I read advertisements different from both text messages and textbooks. When I read advertisements, I usually start by looking at the pictures and creativity rather than reading the text. I do this because advertisements catch your attention with pictures and artwork before being informative like a textbook/ text message.
